How To Pop Skateboard Tricks Higher

Skateboarders often ask how they can get more pop on their tricks.

When I think of skateboarders with pop, I think of Brandon Biebel. This dude has a good snap and a great vertical leap which enables him to pop tricks higher than the rest of us.

There are several factors that come into play when increasing the power of your pop.

The answer comes in three parts:

1) Position Better
2) Pop Harder
3) Jump Higher

Position Better

Certain foot positioning can give you more pop for your tricks. Ultimately it’s up to you to find the positioning that works best. You can ask for opinons but it will probably come down to your own personal preference.

For example, if you wanted more pop for your Ollies, my advice would be to place your front foot further down below the front bolts than normal, and crouch down lower than normal. Then of course, spring up for the Ollie and suck both of your knees to your chest as you clear the obstacle.

The point is to find the best position. There are certain pressure points on your skateboard that will give you better pop than others. Find the right foot positioning for each trick and you’ll find yourself more pop.

Pop Harder

A key tip in getting more height on your tricks is popping harder. The harder the pop, the higher the trick.

That being said, having a new skateboard will obviously give you much better pop than a used skateboard. This is especially true if you wear down the tail of your skateboard a lot. Try not to do that.

If you want that hard pop of a fresh deck, try to buy a new skateboard every 90 days or sooner.

Jump Higher

It’s obvious that you should jump higher to get tricks higher, so let me tell you how.

Your ability to jump higher comes mostly from the strength in your legs, but having strong core muscles is also important. Having strong legs and core can increase your vertical leap, giving you the ability to jump higher, plain and simple.

Here are some exercises for improving your core muscles:

  1. Push ups
  2. Squats
  3. Plank
  4. Back bridge
  5. Hip lift
Look these exercises up on Google or YouTube to see a demonstration of each.

When it comes to the leg muscles, we’re talking about everything from the butt to the calf muscles.

Some of the good drills for this are:

  • Lunges
  • Step ups
  • Level jumps
  • Calf raises
  • Squats

You could also jump rope, go running, biking, swimming, etc.

Workout to get fit & flexible and you’ll see visible improvements in your ability to pop tricks like Biebel.

Ankle Weights

You could even try wearing ankle weights as a way to workout the leg muscles.

In this video, Brandon Biebel is seen wearing ankle weights right before he Ollies over a car …so you know it works 😛

You can find Ankle Weights on Amazon for cheap.

Try ’em out, and the rest of these exercises and drills, to strengthen your leg muscles for more pop. And hey – if working out isn’t really your thing, just know that the more you skate, the more you workout your muscles, and eventually the more height you will gain on your tricks.

Now you have some ideas of what to do to improve your vertical leap and get more pop in your tricks. Practice these drills on a consistent basis and notice the gradual improvements over time.

Keep at it and someday you could be popping your tricks as high as Brandon Biebel.

  • I find that regular exercise has helped me over time to strengthen the muscles I need to do certain tricks. When I first got back into biking I was 26 and out of shape. great post!
